The West Coast premiere of TRADE/MARY MOTORHEAD ma

The West Coast premiere of TRADE/MARY MOTORHEAD marked another successful addition to the rich legacy of collaborative efforts between Beth Morrison Projects and LA Opera (@laopera)! We're looking back at some of our favorite productions over the years to celebrate!

DOG DAYS - DOG DAYS marked the first production of the whirlwind partnership in 2015. Hailed by the New York Times as a riveting, soon-to-be “groundbreaking American classic,” the post-apocalyptic tragedy made waves at its LAO presentation and put BMP on the West Coast map.

P R I S M - P R I S M marked another milestone in our joint history. Not only did Ellen Reid’s (@ellenreidmusic) debut opera make its world premiere with LA Opera at REDCAT (@calartsredcat), but this collaborative project would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2019. It was a major development for BMP, LAO, and, of course, Ellen Reid, who “[took] her place among the host of promising young American opera composers” (The Financial Times).

ANGEL'S BONE - Another Pulitzer Prize-winning BMP production, ANGEL'S BONE, was planned as part of the 2020 season. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the presentation pivoted, becoming the first in our history to be presented digitally. The show was streamed by 20,000 people, demonstrating the strength and resilience of our bond with LAO.

TRADE/MARY MOTORHEAD - Finally, Emma O’Halloran’s (@emmamohalloran) TRADE/Mary Motorhead made its West Coast premiere last month at REDCAT. We're thrilled to celebrate another year of BMP and LAO sharing boundary-pushing, cutting-edge opera with this incredible production starring Naomi Louisa O’Connell (@naomi_louisa_oconnell), Marc Kudisch (@marckudisch), and Kyle Bielfield (@bielfield)!

We're excited to introduce another new member of the #BMP team, Betsy Podsiadlo!

Betsy is the 2023 Mellon Producing Fellow joining the BMP team after finishing her Master’s in Voice at The New School this May. In addition to her work as a producer, Betsy is an active composer, performer, songwriter, and educator with specializations in new opera, choral music, and traditional Appalachian styles. She hopes to use her training from the BMP Producer Academy and the Mellon fellowship to create performances by and for rural Appalachian artists.

Happy Opening Night! We're concluding our tour behind the work of TRADE/MARY MOTORHEAD with co-stars of TRADE, Marc Kudisch (@marckudisch) and Kyle Bylefield (@bielfield).

A veteran of Broadway stages and an opera house favorite, three-time Tony Award nominee Marc Kudisch co-stars in TRADE as a closeted family-man seeking connection with a hired escort.

International recording artist Kyle Bielfield also co-stars in TRADE as an impoverished hustler reckoning with his-and his newborn daughter's-daunting future.

Next up on our tour behind the work of TRADE/MARY MOTORHEAD are Barry & Nancy Sanders, the commissioners of TRADE.

As audience members of BMP: Next Gen, the Sanders’ saw Emma O’Halloran’s winning production of MARY MOTORHEAD and were so moved that they decided to commission her first full-length opera, TRADE.

The double bill now tours around the country, including this month in Los Angeles at REDCAT as a collaborative presentation with LA Opera (@laopera ), Apr. 27-30!

Our second addition of the month to the #BMP team

Our second addition of the month to the #BMP team is our new Senior Associate Producer, Julia Mendes!

Julia Mendes first worked with Beth Morrison Projects as the Associate Producer for the 2023 PROTOTYPE Festival (@prototypefest) and is excited to join the organization full-time as Senior Associate Producer. She has worked as a producer and administrator for a range of other organizations in the fields of music, theater, and film, including Mabou Mines, Sundance Institute, Second Stage Theater, and NJPAC, and is a proud graduate of Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts. She is thrilled to be part of the BMP team, helping bring innovative new music into the world.

We’re getting excited for the West Coast premier

We’re getting excited for the West Coast premiere of TRADE/Mary Motorhead, a collaborative presentation with LA Opera (@laopera) at REDCAT, Apr. 27-30! Throughout the month, we’ll be highlighting several key figures who make the show happen, starting with its composer, Emma O’Halloran (@emmamohalloran)!

The winner of our competition for early-career composers, BMP: Next Gen, O’Halloran has immediately proven to be a powerful new voice. Amanda Cook of I Care If You Listen described her work as “some of the most unencumbered, authentic, and joyful music that I have heard in recent years.”

Patty TBD is beyond excited to join the BMP team! Fresh off the heels of their undergraduate education at UNC-Chapel Hill, Patty comes to BMP from the Chelsea Theater (@chelseatheaternc) in North Carolina, where they worked as Website & Digital Media Coordinator. With an extensive personal & professional history in music, theatre, design, and film, they are excited to maintain and further BMP’s cutting-edge vision for the future of opera and vocal theatre.

Tonight at 8pm, composer and National Sawdust co-founder, Paola Prestini (@paolaprestini ), returns to MASS MoCA (@massmoca ) with a work-in-progress preview of her new opera THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA, created with Royce Vavrek (@roycevavrekcoterie ) and Karmina Šilec (@karminasilec ), that interweaves Hemingway’s classic fable with original portraits of quotidian life to create a look at aging, legacy, and our relationship to oceans.

The evening will include an excerpt of the new work, followed by a conversation on stage with the principal creative team.
